A Look Back at the 1979 Black Music Month Concert Held at the White House (6/6/2021)

President Carter’s Remarks about Black Music Month

June 7th, 2021, will mark the 42nd Anniversary of the Black Music Month Concert Celebration held at the White House during the former U.S. President Jimmy Carter’s administration. On Monday, June 7th, I will have a special podcast episode of Hidden Singles that will detail the history behind Black Music Month, its creation, and of course, feature music from some of the performers that were featured that night at the 1979 inaugural concert event.

You can catch the podcast on anchor.fm/shanitamarie or on Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/show/5gyaylPKXk6EERi4a80nar. Check an earlier post from the beginning of the month for the remaining podcast availability links! But in the meantime, check out video clips of the concert below. Due to copyright and artist performance restrictions, some parts of the audio may have silent sections. In addition, should the links not begin at the selected portion of the video, most of the video starts at the 1:26 mark. Enjoy!
